Importing Personal Effects into Switzerland

You can ship personal effects to Switzerland duty free under certain circumstances.  The following is a summary of what is required when sending personal effects into Switzerland via regular sea freight channels.  Excess baggage via an airline or express freight can require just the customs form, packing list and passport.

Imported goods must be used personal effects that you have owned & used for at least six months prior to importation and that they will continue to be used by you thereafter.

Returning Swiss National:

Returning Swiss National  will require the following for clearance;

  • Swiss customs form 18.44 with original signature. (Please note that the customs form must be signed where it states SIGNATURE about a third of the way up from the bottom right of the page. NOT where it states SIGNATURE OF DECLARANT or at the bottom of the page in the section marked “FOR OFFICIAL USE”!)
  • Copy of Swiss passport
  • Proof of address (housing rental / purchase contract)
  • Proof that you have been abroad for at least one (1) year immediately prior to this importation. e.g. Copy of ATTESTATION obtained from the Town Hall in your Canton.
  • Itemised packing list detailing contents of all packages. (Your agent may supply this).

European Nationals;

National of the following European Union (EU) member countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Ireland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Sweden, Cyprus & Malta will require the following for clearance.

  • Swiss customs form 18.44 with original signature. (Please note that the customs form must be signed where it states SIGNATURE about a third of the way up from the bottom right of the page. NOT where it states SIGNATURE OF DECLARANT or at the bottom of the page in the section marked “FOR OFFICIAL USE”!)
  • Copy of passport
  • Copy Town Hall arrival Attestation / Copy of work / residence permit.
  • Proof of address (housing rental / purchase contract) / Proof of employment.
  • Itemised packing list detailing contents of all packages. (Your moving company may supply this).

All other Nationals:

  • Swiss customs form 18.44 with original signature. (Please note that the customs form must be signed where it states SIGNATURE about a third of the way up from the bottom right of the page. NOT where it states SIGNATURE OF DECLARANT or at the bottom of the page in the section marked “FOR OFFICIAL USE”!)
  • Copy of passport

  • Proof of address (housing rental / purchase contract) / Proof of employment.
  • Itemised packing list detailing contents of all packages. (Your moving company may supply this).

 

An incorrectly completed customs form or missing documentation may result in you having to pay import duties and/or taxes.

New or commercial goods 

For the importation of new or commercial goods you will require a SALES invoice for all items addressed to your Swiss address and if requested a “EUR1 CERTIFICATE”.

Prohibited items

Cash, foreign currencies, securities
Weapons
Pyrotechnic articles (fireworks)
Narcotics and drugs
Transfer of Cultural Property
Product piracy, counterfeits
Medicines (medicinal products) and doping
Radar warning devices
Citizens’ band radio (CB radio)

Vehicles.

Cars / motor bikes must have been owned & used for at least 12 months and you will have to provide evidence showing this.
